This book came so well recommended that I could not wait to read it.. But in the end it was a chore to read. I loved every point he made, but I thought the book could have been more concise. It took so long to paint a picture that I felt the author missed saying things in head on, right to the point sort of way for the sake of attempting to be more descriptive.. And it just didn't work for me.. The last few chapters were probably his best.. Again I loved the points and generally agreed with everything said and when it finally boiled down to the crux of the each point, it was encouraging to me because it reminds you that your not the only one that feels the way the author or others do. I gave it three stars because I think he makes some important declarations and says things about Christianity that need to be said... I say if your interested in this book, read the sample first chapter to see if the writing style is to your liking. If it is then you will love this book and what it has to say and it will challenge your thinking..
This book examines the heretical so called "Christian Churches" of these dangerous times we occupy. Based upon God's word the current popular "ways to salvation" are examined and thoroughly debunked as tools cunningly used in the hands of our adversary the devil. Hope is not lost though. Pastor Fisk clearly proclaims the glorious truth of Christ's gift of forgiveness and eternal life by Grace through Faith given to us freely. I recommend a thoughtful reading of this book for every human on the planet.
If you don't know who Pastor Jonathon Fisk is you need to. He is the high energy host of the youtube channel Worldview Everlasting and frequent guest of the radio program Issues Etcetera. His style is a bit tongue in cheek and definitely not boring. Yet when he speaks to a congregation or at a pastoral conference he sounds like a reserved professor who is passionate about the subject being taught. May God bless you and keep you Pastor Fisk. Rock on!
The author, Jonathan Fisk, is a Lutheran pastor. In the book market today that usually means an over-hyped, over-hair-do'ed, mega-church pastor hawking his latest 7 steps, or it means a deeply insightful and incredibly boring monograph on why the entire Bible hinges on some passage in Leviticus instead of John 3:16. Pastor Fisk doesn't fit either of those categories. The entire layout from the cover and the seven "rules" to the oh-so-hip ancient-future-steam-punk graphics that are placed through-out gently mocks that first convention. The writing and what Pastor Fisk have to say are also a skewering of that second style of religious writing. The overall book is just a great read and a great statement of the freedom of the christian in the gospel. This book will also be unique to anyone in the fact that Lutherans and Lutheranism actually have something vitally important to say to American Christians. This book, while it might be helpful, is not addressed to the "nones" who are largely apathetic about spiritual matters. Its best audience is American Evangelicals and the fallen-away former evangelicals. To anyone who has tried and failed to "live the Christian life" as it has been defined in the last century, this book is for you. What Lutheranism has to say, what Fisk says so well in simple language and great word pictures, is that what the American church has been saying for the last century is generally not the gospel. In its mad rush to stay relevant and to build the kingdom, that church has lost sight of the true gospel and followed after various idols. We are standing at the end of the line, broken in slavery to those various idols. The only thing that will restore is the pure gospel and the freedom that it brings. What this book does best is make a clear picture and summary of where we stand in this moment. After reading this book, if you have been involved in church life to any extent, you will be nodding your head on every page and saying "that's right". And the author tells the story in language that is very visual such that the pictures stick with you. After making clear the troubles of where we stand, he makes a clear statement of how to break the bondage. It is not a how-to manual for building the kingdom in the way say Zondervan publishes daily. What Pastor Fisk does is issue a stirring invitation to be free indeed.
Probably a good book for seeker sensitive church attenders and charismatics. It's weird seeing a Lutheran trying to be relevant. He uses a lot of pop culture references, and comes across like he's speaking in the ..oh i'm so random and ADHD..dialect. Yes that is a dialect.Worldview Everlasting is a GREAT resource. I love their videos, and they do a great job of capturing the attention of the random spastic low attention span ADHD audience that was born after 1975. I think he attempted to take the vibe from their videos and put it in book form. That attempt was sorta accomplished, and sorta kinda not.
