In general I love William Leavitt's work. I was "schooled" with Melodic Rhythms for Guitar. This book is "Ok". I think some of the best points in this book are (1) the key changes in each tune really keep you on your toes, and (2) the authors advise, specifically "don't learn these tunes until they are memorized" as this defeats the purpose of a true sight reading exercise. While there are some jems in this book, after working through some parts I felt more inspired to pull scores from my music library at random or google sheet music for songs I've never heard or played before. For the price it's not a bad book to have.

Can you answer two questions about this book?On the very first page, the author says how to use this book. I didn't understand those suggestions.Mr. Leavitt says:1) Keep a reasonable tempo2) Do not stop (for any reason) before the completion of the "study" (See Q1, below)3) Do not practice until it is approaches memorizationThat's clear: Play the study all the way through. Don't stop. Don't replay it a million times. Play it and move on. Got it!Now here are the two parts I don't understand:Q1) What defines a "study"?I can't figure out what comprises one study! For example, how many studies are on page 4? 1, 6 or 12?Q2) Does Mr. Leavitt mean "go back to the start of the study?" or "go back to the beginning of the book?"He writes: "Keep moving through the studies even though....when you've reached the point of total failure, go back to the beginning and start again."Does this mean go back to the beginning of the book or the beginning of a particular study?ThanksBTW: Accept my apology for the photo being upside-down. I don't know how to fix that.

I bought this book for my husband at his request as a birthday present, this is his review.I ask for this book, at the advise from a YT'er, because I want to learn some sight reading. Don't buy this book unless you already know how to sight read. The author offers no explanations or information. It might be a good practice aid when I learn to sight read.

Good practice but dated. Ok if you like that, like, "classy" 50s jazzy sound and great for development. However, I think I need something more contemporary in style. But, great. Other than personal taste, I really can't knock it.

If you do not sight read at all on guitar, this is not the book for you, and you'd be advised to start with a primer. I started with Chris Buono “Guitarist's Guide To Music Reading”, and it prepared me nicely for this text. It's still a tremendous challenge and I've not gotten completely through it yet, but it's been a fulfilling work in progress.

Great Book! Exactly what I was looking for!

Leavitt is at least as concerned with dynamics, phrasing, etc, as he is with simply learning to read music. This and the companion "Advanced Reading Studies for Guitar" are excellent.

Has made it possible for to increase my sight reading ability greatly. Would recommend this to anyone. Be familiar with the 12 Leavitt fingerings first though.
