This is a book about SQLite written for C programmers who need to hook into SQLite. It's well-written, but was not for me. I am not a C programmer. That said, I am planning on keeping this book as I dive into other texts in my effort to be able to write programs that need a database. I had previously read "Getting Started with SQL: A Hands-on Approach" by Thomas Nield. That book was a great little primer, but did not go far enough.
Many times you need a small database, and don't need / want to set up a server to run it. SQLite is the answer, and is probably the most installed database in the world. Using SQLite helps you get started, gives you a database / SQL primer, and in the second held of the book gives you programming API details initially in C with brief help in a variety of other languages later in the book.I bought the Kindle version, and found the ability text search made it invaluable.
Straight and to the point. Wonderful tutorial. Overall, a great textbook for understanding SQLite.(I am a 30-year career programmer who never before played with SQL!)
Very practical and with a deep look at the internal implementation.
You really can't lose with books from O'Reilly. Since I already knew a fair bit about SQL, the important thing was to find the strange bits about SQLite to get up and running quickly. This book gives you that.Of course, you can learn a lot simply by poking around on-line, but my rule for the past 15-odd years has been to get grounded in an O'Reilly book whenever possible. Once you know what you don't know, then the best resourcs are often free online and you can ask questions from the geek community.
I consult this book regularly in my day to day use of SQLite. There is no information in this book which can not be found elsewhere, but the book captures everything very clearly and it is rare to find a case where the book does not provide the information which is needed.
Very detailed explanation of various SQLite commands, but VERY FEW EXAMPLES. This is weird because usually OReilly books are rich with examples, but this is an exception. Since the net provides very few rich examples of SQLite usage, a cookbook-style SQLite volume would be a big help. This isn't it. Not worth the Kindle price.
Every program has to address data storage and manipulation some way. SQLite makes it possible for a desktop program to cart around a nearly full fledged SQL database engine which can be operated upon by the executeQuery or executedUpdate methods available in major desktop or web languages such as Java or PHP. There are numerous 3rd party SQL drivers for SQLite. Being a Java programmer, my favorite is sqlite-jdbc.
